(Singapore, 06.05.2025)Two of the world’s most prominent philanthropic organizations, the Tanoto Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen collaboration across Asia. The partnership aims to address pressing challenges in public health, nutrition, education, and the development of the region’s philanthropic ecosystem.

The MoU marks a significant milestone in an ongoing relationship between the two foundations, which share a deep commitment to unlocking human potential and fostering systems-level change. The collaboration will focus on identifying and implementing joint initiatives that support sustainable development and long-term impact for underserved communities across Asia.
Belinda Tanoto, member of the Board of Trustees at Tanoto Foundation, emphasized the importance of partnerships in addressing complex and interconnected regional challenges. She noted that in a world marked by widening inequalities and shifting global dynamics, no single institution can solve problems in isolation. “This partnership is a significant step toward unlocking new possibilities for systems change in Asia,” she said. “By partnering with like-minded organizations like the Gates Foundation, we can leverage our collective strengths to catalyze lasting change. We believe that when we invest in people, we unlock human potential and transform futures.”
Each initiative developed under the MoU will be governed by a specific agreement, setting clear objectives, scope, responsibilities, and financial commitments. Both foundations reaffirm their shared principle that innovations and solutions must remain accessible and affordable to the communities that need them most.
Hari Menon, Director for South and Southeast Asia at the Gates Foundation, highlighted the importance of local and regional partnerships in creating lasting impact. “We’re excited to deepen our partnership with the Tanoto Foundation, building on the important work we have done together, starting from our nutrition programs in Indonesia. By bringing together our complementary strengths, networks, and regional expertise, we can accelerate progress and help improve the lives of millions across Asia,” he said.
The Tanoto Foundation, established in 1981 by Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto, has a long-standing track record of supporting education reform, healthcare innovation, and leadership development across Asia. The Gates Foundation, meanwhile, has played a global role in efforts to eradicate infectious diseases, expand financial inclusion, and improve agricultural productivity.
With this new strategic partnership, both organizations aim to combine their insights, reach, and influence to promote inclusive development across the region. Guided by a belief in collaboration, evidence-based action, and long-term investment, the two foundations are poised to make a meaningful difference in the lives of millions throughout Asia.
